There are five variations of Creole black tobacco or native seed. The Habanesis were the first established variation of Cuba. This variation started from the seeds of Nicotiana tabacum that were brought from Mexico and planted in Cuba in 1534 and were (and are) the basis of the vast majority of the world’s cigar tobacco.
The Habanesis variety was developed in 1907 in Cuba and was harvested in the shade for layers and in the sun for capote and casing. This tobacco would give rise to Cuban tobacco, including the Corojo.
